The Torlesse Range is one of the most accessible mountain ranges in the country. It is located on the Great Alpine Highway, just over one hours drive from Christchurch. The main access points into the park are the Kowai River (private), Porters Pass, Lake Lyndon Road, Craigieburn Road and the Porter Heights Skifield Road. Access to some areas requires permission from neighbouring landholders.

The park attracts trampers, hunters, winter climbers and cross-country skiers, picnickers, boaties and botanists.

  • Rabbit Hill – 3 hour each way
  • Mt Torlesse – 2 hours one way (permission for access required)
  • Thirteen mile Bush – 3 hours one way (permission for access required)
See the Department of Conservation - Korowai-Torlesse page for information on walks, times, route guides etc. You can purchase a route guide from them.

Where Avoca House got its name from
When looking for a local name for the B&B I came across the Old Avoca Homestead (built in 1909). It is situated on the Christchurch to Greymouth railway line (Tranz Alpine route). I really liked the name and eventually found out that it is the name of an Irish textile town (which is really quite appropriate). We also have the Avoca River on the other side of the Craigieburn Range.

The old Avoca homestead has been restored to preserve its heritage value. It has 8 beds, a log burner and water supply provided. Access is by hiking (or 4WD only via Craigieburn Road). You will need to buy hut tickets from a DoC visitors centre to stay there.
